Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday inaugurated the Guwahati Terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA).
The Terminal project, delivered by Guwahati International Airport Ltd., is a rear feat as it has been completed, from design to operational readiness, within a year time.
Adani Airport Holdings Limited operates it.
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, highlighted that the terminal demonstrates how world-class infrastructure can be delivered quickly. He added that the project remains deeply rooted in regional identity.
“It will strengthen connectivity, support economic growth across the Northeast, and offer passengers a seamless, modern travel experience,” said Gautam Adani.
Designers drew inspiration from Assam’s kopou phool (foxtail orchid) and indigenous bamboo varieties such as Bholuka bamboo from Assam and Apatani bamboo from Arunachal Pradesh, and named the terminal ‘The Bamboo Orchids’.Incorporation of around 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo positions it among India’s most prominent examples of nature-inspired architecture, where traditional craftsmanship merges with modern engineering.
Included in the project was a comprehensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) programme, supported by an expert team from Munich, Germany. Ensuring alignment of systems, processes, personnel, and passenger flows allowed safe and seamless operations from day one.
The terminal features DigiYatra-enabled processing, smart check-in systems, and spacious passenger areas. It can handle 13.1 million passengers annually by 2032.
