Rourkela: The Rourkela Steel Plant’s new control room for critical equipments was inaugurated at Coal Chemical Department by Ram Narayan Nayak, CGM Incharge (Maintenance) RN Nayak in the presence of Atashi Pramanik CGM (A, I & C&IT), I Rajan, CGM (CO & CC) and M. K. Mohanty, GM In-Charge (Instrumentation).

 K. K. Patra, GM I/c, CCD congratulated and thanked all the departments involved for making the relocation possible.

S. Pattnaik, DGM, CCD and Mr. Raveesh Patidar, Senior Manager, CCD explained about the working and advantages of the installed system on the occasion.

It may be noted that Exhausters and Boosters installed in Coal Chemicals Department are most critical equipments for supplying Coke Oven Gas to all consumer units of RSP. Uninterrupted operation of these high speed machines is essential to ensure availability of fuel gas. The Control room for operation of these machines was located at machine house. Exposure to Coke Oven and mixed gas in the area was affecting equipment reliability apart from creating an unhealthy ambience.

After a series of brain storming sessions by the Coal Chemical Department collective, it was decided to relocate the control room from machine house building to CCD Emergency Control Room Building. Job execution on turnkey basis by reputed suppliers would have cost about Rs. 1.2 Crore. Hence it was decided to execute job through in-house resources. With the support of Heavy Maintenance (Electrical) and Materials Management Department, new control room was successfully relocated within 9 months by Coal Chemicals Department and Instrumentation Department.

It is worth mentioning that entire job was completed at a cost of around Rs. 43 lakhs and hence resulted in a direct financial savings of about 77 lakhs for the company. Besides, the new facility will also improve the reliability of instruments and also help in eliminating the failure of equipments.

This remarkable feat was achieved by the cross functional team comprising of young managers namely R. K. Singh, Senior Manager CCD, R. N. Sethy, Senior Manager, CCD, A. Baxala, Manager CCD, Raveesh Patidar, Senior Manager, Instrumentation and Ravi Teja, Deputy Manager Heavy Maintenance (Electrical).  Piyush Jain, AGM, CCD coordinated the programme
